Subject: WCCC first round matchup preview: Shredder-Crafty

Author: Darrel Briley

Date: 23:35:57 08/13/05

These games were played on ICC as Bob was tuning the 8x Opterons for WCCC. Of
course the engine parameters and book used by Crafty in these games are not what
will be used during the tournament. Shredder played all games in Chesspartner
5.3 GUI with a custom book.

It will be interesting to see how much effect Shredder's tournament hardware of
4 cpus will have on the outcome, as well as Crafty's tournament parameters
combined with Peter's book. And now, the games....

Here Shredder gets an uncomfortable position out of the opening, sacs a pawn for
activity. Still, is worse. Sacs a knight, but still is worse. Then goes on to
win the game! A comment from an observer after the game was "We have just seen
why Shredder has to be one of the favorites to win".

Black to move. 38...Nxf2

In the second game Crafty got a terrible position out of the opening. Shredder
inexplicably misses 16. Nxd4 winning. Eelco has said that Shredder 9.02 on his
system (which is approximately the same speed as the system used in these games)
finds 16. Nxd4 in 36 seconds, as does Pro Deo 1.1 (and as does Pro Deo 1.1 on
the system used in the game).

Due to my mistake EGTB's were not being used in these first two games, and that
may have cost Shredder here.

White to move, and plays 16. Bc4, missing 16. Nxd4, winning.

Shredder mysteriously allows (acutally, missed is more accurate) 25. Rxh6, but
then, somehow draws
