During many computer chess events the same pattern may be observed: All people who are present and live at the event, have fun and a good time; and some guys in the internet audience feel the necessity to find or construct something unfriendly. My hint for those (may they live in Vienna or somewhere else): simply come to the event(s) and meet all the nice people! In Mainz I myself realized this with one special person: Alexandra Kosteniuk. My picture of her had been that of a model-like carrierist - and it was completely wrong. In real life she is a nice young woman, nothing arrogant at all - and a very tough chess fighter (ask Sokolov, for instance). The annual tournament in Mainz (always in August) is especially suited for players who want to bring their families with them: * Only short time controls are played (25+10 is the longest one) * There are much more women in place than in other chess tournaments (players as well as wives of players or programmers). * There is even a Kindergarten in the tournament building especially arranged for kids who are not interested in chess. * From the tournament hall you can walk directly out to the Rhein promenade. The term "groupie" is used differently in different contexts. Concerning the 960 Computer World Championship in Mainz an appropriate adhoc-definiton might be "interested (and interesting) female person of any age - which is sitting next to one special programmer and his computer for most of the time".
