I would rather go for Sockel 939 the are much cooler and consume very little power and hence very easy and good to overclock. An AMD 64 3000+ is very cheap but most probably overclockable to 2.4 GHz. To answer your question, if your AMD Athlon 64 3400+ runs on 2.4 GHz (there are different versions) you have most probably the chess performance of an Pentium 4 3.8 GHz.
