Do you plan to buy an old Sockel 754-Athlon? I would rather go for Sockel 939
the are much cooler and consume very little power and hence very easy and good
to overclock.

An AMD 64 3000+ is very cheap but most probably overclockable to 2.4 GHz.

To answer your question, if your AMD Athlon 64 3400+ runs on 2.4 GHz (there are
different versions) you have most probably the chess performance of an Pentium 4
3.8 GHz.
