Maybe the initial poster is not aiming to produce an engine with the main criteria of strength. He's completely new to programming and therefore, getting something that works decently may be a more fundamental aim. If this is true, I'd suggest an object-oriented programming language such as C++. In fact, given that he's got no programming experience, I suggest that he must forget about efficiency and just focus on writing code that works.
