I think this is a design mistake in the xboard protocol. The protocol *should* specify a sign convention for the score. It is confusing when the displayed scores must be interpreted differently depending on the engine. As long as XBoard and Winboard work the way they currently do, I think the best solution for engine authors is to make the sign of the printed scores be configurable from the engine's initialisation file. This enables the user to display the score in whatever way (s)he prefers.
