I'm a seasoned programmer and still have a hard time working on a chess engine.
As suggested earlier, start with something smaller. If you want to try gaming,
try Reversi/othello. It's pretty easy compared to chess but uses similiar
principles. There's also a plithora of resources online including source in
various languages.
