You can use GPL code even in commercial applications, but only if you dynamically link to the GPL code. What this means is you can't just copy/paste code. But if the GPL code is a library you can just make calls to it. Look at how many games use SDL for example, all you have to do is include the .dll or .so etc IANAL but this is how I've understood the license. I may stand corrected.
