Yesterday evening I checked how the bad 11. ...g5? managed to make it into Crafty's opening book and the result came as somewhat of a surprise and might be interesting for some human 1...e5 players too. Actually I think Fruit "refuted" 5. ...Bc5 , a respected line of the four knight Scot, and that the game is of some theoretical relevance because of that. 5...Bc5!? is supposed to be a good and less drawish alternative to the well-known 5 ..Bb4 and is recommended e.g. in (amongst others) John Emms "Play the Open Games as Black" . 5...Bc5 6. Nxc6 bxc6 7. Bd3 d6 ( d5 is suspect, see Emms) 8. O-O Ng4 (Nd7 is again not expected to equalize) . Now the mainline goes 9.Bf4 g5!? ( again, probably works here), but back to Fruit's chosen sideline 9. h3 Ne5 10. Na4 Bb6 11. Be2 ( so far no reasonable alternative availlable for black) . 11...g5!? ( Emms comment: " aggression is the order of the day, as otherwise White simply captures on b6 and plays f4" ) . I think he has a point - how is black supposed to equalize if white can play like this ? Stem game is Ginzburg-Sorin, 1995 ( as quoted by Eduard Nemeth yesterday already). Unfortunately Fruit's 12. Qd2 looks like a clear tactical refutation of 11. ...g5 to me, which basically means that 5. ...Bc5 isn't good enough to equalize unless the line can somehow be healed again. Peter
