One other note. When you decide to "read" make sure you read _everything_ before bailing out, so that you won't wait for another bit before reading the second command. In Crafty, I use read() which sucks in the complete input buffer, then I break that down into individual messages myself to be sure I get everything at one batch (also with just one system call overhead).
