By far the best result in this tournament is Fruit's result. It had a totally
inferior hardware, no EGTB's, no decent book ... yet it still came in second
beating some great programs. A little better opening book preparation
(especially games against Zappa and Isichess) and it could have easily won the
even. Not to downplay Zappa's success, but Zappa had an incredible opening book
preparation and 4 cpus's as well as EGTB. It is amazing that Fruit was still
able to even compete in this event let alone get close to winning it. I
remember when I first ran an engine tournament at home when I first downloaded
Fruit 2.1. I was shocked at results since it was the first engine that could
get good scores against Shredder. Obviously the version being played is much
stronger, but Fruit always seemed very rusty and it seems that they have just
started polishing it.
