I'm really tired of Windows and would like to try Power Mac G5 (Dual)/OSX Tiger, or an iBook... My questions are: 1) Database software for chess to run with OSX-Tiger ? SCID ?? 2) Chess programs = Hiarcs or Chessmaster? 3) Can I compile Xboard for Mac (or is there an already compiled version?) 4) Program to play Internet chess with Macs= Jin ? Well, the other option is to build a new desktop PC, maybe a Dual Opteron? Apart from R. Hyatt's opinions there are also good reviews about Dual Opteron's performance in database tests (DB2 and MySQL) (http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2447) in which I have some interest. In this case I have some questions too: 5)Are Dual Opterons PCs as stable as Dual Xeons? 6)Which motherboard should I buy in case I decide to build a Dual Opteron? Power supply? Memory? 7) What about chessbase products? Deep Fritz runs faster on Intel or AMD ? Which processor is faster for Deep Fritz? If it's Intel, which processor (it's a bit confusing now as there are so many different models to choose...)? My last question: I'm using a Dual-MP 2600+, built it myself (very unstable... maybe it's because of bad memory, or power suply, or cooler... don't know yet, I'm trying to find the reason; it runs better with Linux, but sometimes hangs too :-( ). I'd like some help to fix it. Tryed changing Windows 2000 to XP Pro, but when it updates to SP2 system becomes _very_ unstable, so I decided to stay with SP1, but it still hangs when analysing with "Deep" engines (it doesn't matter if it's Fritz or Crafty or Shredder or Junior...), or sometimes it crashes when playing engine-engine matches with PONDER=ON. Fixing this problem is driving me nuts... this Dual used to run very well when I was using only one DDR-266 256MB memory, but I've "upgraded" it to use 2x512MB DDR-333 Samsung memory; using memtest I get many errors, so I'm trying to change memory first. Please help... A. Ponti
