Well I would definetely advice you to stay away from a Power Mac. I also thought a few years back that going to the Mac platform was the way to stability. First of all Mac's crash just as often if not more than a good well built PC system. Second of all they are just too inflexible. I know others think otherwise, but that is my opinion. Now with regards to what is a better platform (Intel or AMD), I think both will serve you well IF you choose the correct motherboard and components. Opteron's have come a long way since the early days and now are EXTREMELY stable. The Intel platform is also very very reliable with proper setup. AMD for chess seems to have a better performance than Intel. I don't know why but they do. The most stable Opteron board is probably Tyan, although they are quite expensive. For Intel I would choose Supermicro. These are designed for stability and might get edged out by other motherboards in the performance department ... but if your priority is stability ... then that is the way to go. By the way I heard that Supermicro now produce Opteron boards but I haven't tried it out. If you only want 2 processors maybe you don't have to go the Xeon or Opteron route. You might be better served with dual core processors that both Intel and AMD are offering. You can save a bundle then and you will not be tied down to registered buffered RAM. If you have the cash for Opterons then you should also look at dual core Opterons. This way you have 4 processors. If you want more than that you can check out the new Iwill motherboard ... It can use 4 cpu units which means 8 cores.
