Hi Ross,

I don't think you have to worry about the drinking. I think Alekhine was
still drinking alcohol at the time he defeated Capablanca. If I recall
correctly, he stopped drinking only after losing the first of his two matches
against Euwe.

By the way, I remember an amusing (but completely off-topic) anecdote
from one of the matches between Alekhine and Bogolyubov. Bogolyubov
was a strong player with an even stronger confidence, and never really
understood how he could lose to Alekhine. During one of the matches,
he got the absurd idea that Alekhine's secret was his habit of drinking
alcohol between and during the games. In a desperate attempt to
even the score, he tried to copy Alekhine's drinking habits. Amazingly,
it seemed to work -- but unfortunately just for a few rounds.

I don't remember, I'm afraid. :-)
