I have seen some of the new and very strong freeware programs come along over the years, the most significant one prior to yours, being Ruffian, yet even though they have provided fun and interest, none had pushed forward the field of chess programming as much as Crafty. The reasons are clear. It has been a blueprint for many to start and build their own. No one can doubt Crafty is very strong, adn that Bob's geenorsity is heartfelt throughout the community. And meaning no disrepsect to Bob, no one can claim it was vying, on single-cpu platforms, for the very top spots. Then your program came along, with such a loud thunderclap, that it has literally taken the community by storm. Not only has your engine done the unthinkable by breaking that long-held myth that the commercials would always remain a notch or two above, a myth that could only be broken by proving it to be a myth, but you have *shown* exactly how it has been done. Ideas are going to be copied, and used, and this isn't to be considered surprising much less unusual. However, the field will have risen at least a couple of notches thanks to your generosity, and that is a good thing. Isaac Newton once wrote "If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants." Here you are providing the field with a set of new and quite tall shoulders for others to see from. BTW, I will be getting a PDA very soon, and am looking forward to Fruit running from CEBoard! :-) Albert >On August 23, 2005 at 15:23:49, Ulf Flörsheimer wrote: > >>Does anybody know if, when and how the WCCC version of Fruit will be >>distributed? >> >>Ulf > >I don't know myself. > >Professionals who came to WCCC said that Fruit is not a threat for their >sellings.
