I agree. Fabien's decision shouldn't be made in order to protect the top spots
for the commerical engines. That would be just ridiculous unless he was getting
a cut in their profits or something. As to others improving, well, that's the
whole idea of making it open source, isn't it? The point is that the bar will be
that much higher. Let's not presume that somehow the limits of chess programming
have been reached or nearly so, since I think that isn't reasonable by any
means. Instead, Fabien has provided a top-notch blueprint from which to study,
learn, and improve upon. Crafty's is no less valuable of course, since they are
different, and thus offer different insights and approaches. Just as studying a
great book on strategy doesn't exclude one from studying another by another
offer. It may simply re-enforce some things one knows, or add something that one
didn't.
