In this case, you want to know: * how the sytem runs without running any applications active. and how are the temps, for the various components? * now fire up some app - NOT the chess apps, and run it over several hours. Something that will work the cpu/memory, etc., but NOT the hard drive. How are the temps and system performing, now? * now fire up ONE well-debugged chess program, and let it play against first, a large test suite, and then playing against itself, with the EGTB's working the hard drive(s). Since you have a dual core system, you may need to work this on first one core, and then on the other core, and finally, both together. If you have access to another system, try your software combo on it. It could be something as simple as a memory leak in one of the programs, or a combination of higher temps when the system is being fully exercised for a long period of time. Needless to say, check your system fans, connections, etc., and be sure all are working, and clear of dust/dirt/hair that will raise temps inside the system. Good luck, Dave
