The difference is that Windows in default setup gives a boost to foreground programs. This is of course a good thing for 99% of Windows users, you want the program you are working with to get most cpu and let backgrond tasks take up the sparetime without bother you. This is also (I think) the thought behind Fritz's lowering of enginepriority, you want to give the user an easy to navigate gui, thats what (s)he works with, and it cost only a very few elo points. Another issue if we are talking of engine-engine matches with short timecontrol running on the same machine is what an engine do after it have delivered the move, maybe some do the cleanup/learning feature now and therby steal some cpu-power from his opponent :) Odd Gunnar
