Have you checked out jose? http://jose-chess.sourceforge.net/
I'd prefer something a little more lightweight myself, but jose is pretty nice.

Sounds like fun. I'd like to write an othello/reversi engine at some point, too.
Will the protocol be more like xboard or uci? Also a fun fact: did you know that
Fabien (of Fruit fame) wrote an othello program for the palm a while ago (I
think)?
