Yep, it's java. You might also need MySQL in order to use the database features,
but I'm not sure. I also remembered that a KDE program slibo (gui plus xboard
engine) has a 3D interface:

Fabian's is called piloth. You can still find it kicking around, e.g., here:

I've tried other othello programs in the past, too, like Noble Moor and another
one called Othello (by Frank Lin). I think they're all pretty good (for a palm).
