I believe what Michael Ginat wrote about Bobby Fischer. Bobby Fischer is a tremendously gifted chess grandmaster. He had to battle the entire Soviet Chess School by himself. For a long time, he just played 1.e4 and the Sicilian Najdorf, exclusively, no matter who he was facing. This enabled the Soviet masters ample time to prepare for his "limited" opening repertoire. But as we all know, Fischer almost always found the right replays overboard. This should tell us how strong Fischer can be even without opening preparations which modern grandmasters depend heavily upon.
