Works fine here. You probably forgot the -zp (zippy) option or didn't compile in
zippy support, which is required to run a chess program to the chess server.

So for compiling read zippy.README in the xboard package.

To build the Zippy version of xboard, on most systems just do:
	configure --enable-zippy
	make

to start xboard I use:
xboard -zp -ics -fcp chessprogram -autoflag
