Really strange that you should mention this - about 3 years or so back , me
and a couple of collegues at work were discussing just such an idea .. an
immersive 3d environment - ofcourse we were not thinking in terms of chess at
that time (other than me , no one else in the group was interested in chess).
When we came to know of lookingglass internally
(http://www.sun.com/software/looking_glass/) - before it was released outside ,
we even thought about modifying it or 'adding a theme' to it to prototype our
ideas.
Roughly , the idea was more of something like a house with different 'rooms'
which you enter for different purpose (work , entertainment , play , etc) - a
glorified 3d desktop changer based on the required functionality if you want to
call it. We were sick and tired of the flat 'deskboard' approach to GUI in pc's.

Considering the lack of UI expertise (we were only good programmers , not UI
design experts) the idea fizzled out- but we did come up with some good ideas ,
stored away to be used later :)
I will bounce this idea off Vincent ... let us see where we can take it (if he
does buy into it ofcourse :) ).

Nice idea, thanks a lot !

Regards,
Mridul
