Hi Alain,
>
>would you make a visible hardware change to make a computer usable ?

first i will reply in general as a Collector and then as a Chess Player and then
in specifics

as a Collector..sadly no change to a computer that will effect its uniqueness
is acceptable
by this i mean.. i will only collect computers that are released for sale in
their EXACT state of release
any modification is unacceptable to me
not only visible modifications but internal unseen ones as well
i know a collector that had a rare computer which did not work and so he
replaced most of the internal components with those of another computer
for me this computer is now UNCOLLECTABLE
in fact i consider the original defective computer as more valuable and more
collectable then the now working but modified one

so how does all of this coincide with my post about not repairing old computers?

it is the solemn duty of a collector to try in any way possible to repair a
computer and RESTORE it to its original working state

visible changes are the least preferable and i would avoid them like the plague
normal repairs such a reed switches and processors are totally ok because these
components are general in nature and do not significantly take away from the
unique character of each computer

however when an internal repair is so extensive that it actually replaces the
internal components to a large extent, then the computer is no longer the
same, has lost its identity, and has been modified

i would therefore accept normal repairs but not repairs that change Eproms for
example

as a Chess player..then of course any repair that can make a defective computer
work is ok
the goal as a player is to have a computer that will play chess so why not do
what can de done?

AS A COLLECTOR i would say this is OK..for the time being
:)
but as you mention the CC10 is so inexpensive and so easily found that i would
look for another example

admittedly a minor change
but..sadly i would look for another example

as a player both modifications are of course very minor and totally acceptable

Best Regards
Steve
