Mig Greengard knows a lot about chess, as his livlihood stems from writing about it. But I suspect that he is far from a computer chess expert. So, when the ChessBase folks explain to him why they are taking some approach, he is likely to take it hook, line, and sinker. Not that he is gullible, because I don't think he is. But I think that when a doctor tells you about your stomach, you guess he knows more than you do. So when a chess software company tells you about their chess software, you are liable to believe it. I don't doubt his integrity. It is even possible that a majority of the ChessBase ENGINEERS believe the new ad copy [or lack thereof when it comes to the standard performance ratings like championships and SSDF results]. If you don't design chess engines, I think that the things that they say might make sense to you. But I guess that not a single one of the chess engine developers believes it. BTW, ChessBase is clearly RIGHT that the engine strength is not the most important factor in chess software sales. My ranking: 1. Shelf space 2. Spiffy ad copy 3. Spiffy software box 4. Spiffy installation 5. Spiffy features .. 178. Engine strength That is as far as SALES are concerned. For analysis [on the other hand], stronger is better and anyone who says otherwise is full of beans.
