Read the documentation of xboard especially the section after Options. There are
all the Options described and also how the syntax must be. For the documentation
type 'man xboard' in the console (xterm or whatever).

The file .Xdefaults (or .Xresources) have to be in your home directory. They are
read when the Xserver starts up. If you make changes to them you may have to
restart the Xserver for the changes to take place, or in the case of .Xresources
type 'xrdb -load .Xresources'.

The files can contain options for different Xserver applications. Lines starting
with a ! are comments.
e.g. Here is the contents of my .Xresources:

!XTerm resources
xterm*colorMode: false
xterm*scrollBar: true
xterm*rightScrollBar: true
xterm*scrollLines: 1000

!xboard resources
xboard*showThinking: true
xboard*internetChessServerHost: chessclub.com
xboard*colorizeMessages: true
xboard*boardSize: Small
xboard*titleInWindow: true
xboard*highlightLastMove: true
!xboard*pixmapDirectory: ~/Chess/pieces/dyche/
xboard*internetChessServerInputBox: true
xboard*whitePieceColor: #ffffff
xboard*blackPieceColor: #1d1d1d
xboard*lightSquareColor: #ccbda4
xboard*darkSquareColor: #a88964
