Untar it, cd into the xboard directory, type "./configure --enable-zippy", when that finishes, type "make" and "make install" and you should be set. I am using 4.2.6, later versions seem to have a "hang" issue with Crafty that I have not found. Sort of like either xboard or crafty misses a "done" message, or they get out of order or something, and things hang and xboard just refuses additional games until I kill and restart. 4.2.6 does not fail at all for me...
