Much of the same information (with even greater detail in some cases) was
presented by the same author in the old printed Computer Chess Reports. And the
author noted in both articles that some of the data presented was based on even
earlier sources. So any programmer who wants to use this type of information has
already had the opportunity to do so. Most
authors of top programs are reluctant to disclose details about their programs,
but Bob Hyatt (Crafty) isn't, and his program has, for instance, a bonus for the
bishop pair (.25 pawn) and an additional bonus (.30 pawn) for Bishop versus
Knight in an endgame with pawns on both sides of the board. He has also
experimented with bonuses for various piece combinations (for example, Bishop +
Rook versus Knight + Rook). I'm sure that all top programs do something similar
(or even more sophisticated), but the details are generally known only to the
programmers.
