Hi Mike
while the Excellence is a fine computer ,it is not very valuable
they appear quite often on Ebay and depending on conditon and the completness of
the set(box, manual pieces)they generally sell for around $50

 My Fidelity "Chess
>Challenger 7" also has the same problem. Was this a common defect with
>Fidelity?

not to my knowledge
while i have both of these computers ever since they were first released i have
not had this problem

however, for the Excellence and for many of the Fidelity computers in this type
of housing, the battery compartment usually goes on the fritz(no pun intended)as
the plastic battery door was not made sturdy enough to hold the batteries,
resulting in them moving around and falling out of the computer

Best
Steve
