Subject: Some Pro Deo ruminations

Hello all,

It is good to see Bruce Moreland back again! He posted something
computerchess-related in CTF once already before but it is good to see him back
here with Ferret!

A few Pro Deo notes on the discussed position; Pro Deo has a bug somewhere with
KBPK handling so that must be a double disadvantage here for Pro Deo. I tried to
find relevant material about the Rebel KBPK bug with the CCC search engine but
could not find any.

There are a few Pro Deo switches that Ed gave us that could have some influence
here and with Bad Bishop engames in general, but I'm having mixed results with
them so far. The position does not have a clear winning or losing variation so
that makes not such a good testposition. All moves are theorethically a draw.
The material scores do not tell everything, for Chess Tiger especially I suspect
that in spite of the big evals it can still play a position well. Harold Faber
has posted to that effect about Tiger evals.

The latest try now with Pro Deo Vulcan sticks to about +5.00 but there are
curious side-effects such as a heap of false fail highs in every iteration.
Could that be bug related? I hope Ed can do something with the material...

Not so bad in relation to the other two versions I think! Experimental is
already in this version
[Eternal Checks = Normal] * Algorithm to detect eternal checks
which is a hidden option in Pro Deo 1.1 and I'm not sure if it works well but
worth a try. No perpetual checks I think in this position but maybe there is an
effect on detecting move repetitions? Don't know..

Now in next version {9k16IQ} I added
[Pruning = MISC_59] * Recalculate Bad Bishop (endgame)

The output is differerent! But not totally successful. 2.67 for the position at
plydepth 23 is great and is sustained for a full ply, but then the score goes in
the wrong direction again for ply 24. I see exactly the same in the following
version, so maybe there is a clue there? It maybe pure coincidence but at this
point the nodecounter is also overflowing, Kaj Soderberg I believe reported some
other problems at these depths? Strange..

Occasionally I see a () search which I don't believe I've seen before

Next version has one other feature from Ed's arsenal to try:
[Pruning = MISC_79] * Bugfix KBPK Bad Bishop (King Safety)

Unfortunately there are again many false fail highs, but at least there is an
effect to be seen of the switch!
