Fortunately, there is an easier way. There are two different FRC enabled
versions
of XBoard, one by Anastasios Milikas and one by Fabien Letouzey and myself.

XBoard-FRC (Anastasios's program) is perhaps a bit more user-friendly,
because it includes a menu item for choosing one of the 960 different
startup positions. With XBoard-960 (Fabien's and mine program), you
must either set up the position manually or load it at startup with the
'-lpf' and '-lpi' parameters (you will need a file with all the 960 FRC
positions in FEN format).

If you want to run an UCI FRC engine (like Homer, Glaurung or the
upcoming Fruit WCCC) you will also need the most recent PolyGlot beta
(1.4 beta 2). Older PolyGlot versions do not support FRC. The source
code for PolyGlot 1.4 beta 2 can be found here:

http://www.glaurungchess.com/polyglot_14_b2.tar.gz

Using XBoard-FRC or XBoard-960, I have been able to play FRC with
AICE, The Baron, Fruit, Glaurung, Gothmog, Homer and Jonny (but
please not that the FRC versions of Baron and Fruit are not yet publicly
available).
