My suggestion is that you check and make sure nothing else is eating up CPU time. For example, I just got a Toshiba laptop with a PII 366 processor. Imagine my surprise when I discovered Fritz running at a speed equivalent to a P133, even when I had nothing else running. After checking a bit, I discovered a Toshiba power management application eating up more than 50% of the CPU. Killing it gave me the performance I expected. You may have a similar problem with some utility you're not aware of.
