The pricing reflects the current charge of about $2.4K per Opteron 875. These
prices should decline next month.
By the time you add HDD, video card etc plus the software you will add a
significant amount of $$.

The problem with multi cores is that Microsoft assumes that you are a business
and therefore have lots of $$ for multiple users etc.

You will also want extensive testing done. If you go to X 64 there are many
diver limitations so you should have some extensive testing done by whoever
builds it.

I would recommend staying with 32 bit until x64 is a bit more mature. I have had
some reliability problems with this OS.

BTW, I don't think that having a X8 system returns your investment in terms of
performance. My personal experience is that the chess engines available at this
point time are not able to fully take advantage of the additional 32 bits or the
additional cpu cores. Zappa may be the only exception, but since that engine is
not currently slated to go commercial, the strongest engine appears to be Fruit,
single processor. For the WCC 2005, that engine used a AMD 3800 slightly
overclocked.
