Long ago, the company I work for now used that scheme (tie the product to physical properties of the machine). Unfortunately it caused great problems when they changed hardware. A production application that used to work would suddenly fail when they got new hardware. For a case like that, it simply cannot be used. I am very sure that the cost in technical support was far greater than any savings from piracy that we might have achieved. A more flexible license mechanism worked much better for us. But our situation is very different. I expect that we may see fruit licensed under different schemes. Quite likely, it will show up in other areas like (for instance) an engine under ChessAssistant or something like that in the future. When distributed in that way, it may have a different license mechanism. Or they may change the license mechanism if it causes too many problems. I am guessing that they will change it. Imagine if you have 10,000 customers. Every year 4000 of them are going to completely change their hardware. Now expand it to 50,000 customers. In other words, if they become very successful, they will generate a problem that is impossible to deal with.
