As Eugene said, you can get the compression utility and compress the tablebases you already have (you will have to delete the uncompressed files yourself, if both are present crafty uses uncompressed ones). Also, you do not need to download the five men tablebases. You can get the tablebase generator and produce them yourself in your machine. I do not know how long it takes, but if your connection is slow maybe less than the download time (:
