off of the mate distance, so it should be regarded as an error, and was by far

Adams' 62. ... Kg6 was also slightly sub-optimal.  Kasparov found the best
move, 63. Nd4.  Adams spent the rest of the game trying to get his king in
front of the pawn, rather than admit the game is completely lost and try to
stave off mate for the longest time.  This decision can't be faulted, of
course.
