You should download sun's Jre and try using that. Note that Because for some reason Sun does not allow java distribution in Linux, they made special licence for java and it forbids it. If you want java for Linux, you must download it from there website, but bundling java with Linux distros is not allowed! I personally dont understand why Sun is doing this, maybe they want to get some edge for their Solraris OS, so only Solaris includes java by default. But free java has made great progress recently, look for example http://planet.classpath.org, they have now implemented ~95% java 1.4 class libraries.
