As far as I have seen, most here does not understand Karpov attitude towards Chess computers, programs, etc. His disdain, his vision of a "toyish world". Well, around 15 years ago I had a meeting with another GM, this time one from Argentina. He had just played a game with a dedicated unit, the strongest of the age, I do not remember which was, steve Blincoe surely can deduce with the date. After the lose to the machine, I talked with the man, still amazed, dumbed. I expected some wise chess comment. Some analysis of the game. But from his mouth I only heard once and again the following, funny and sad sentence: - How could I lose a game against a piece of furniture? Denial I have seen all around in the middle of chess comunity. It is easy for us to say this or that GM is an idiot that does not understand or whatever, but just think in this: they have invested ALL his life playing games of chess. His entire identities consist in being so good chess players. They are what they are because of that. Now, then, what can you expect but denial if just "a piece of furniture", something you can get in a shop at 30 bucks, gives you a mauling and makes of your full life of dedication to be a best player almost a thing of laughter? I would not be happy if tomorrow a word processor was capable of writting better spanish prose than me. I am sure I would say "tha's a toy good only to write Xmas letters, nothing more". Besides Karpov is in the middle of many important things about chess and frankly does no follow the actualties of our little hobby. He is not member of CCC. He does not care much as we, each of us, does not care much of many things that are of not impotance for us. For him, computer chess lack seriousness because there is not fight with a human being. I do not see in his words nothing to reproach. He is just just a human being trying to defend himself, the realm of his action and worth. It is what we do everyday even here about tiny issues. My best fernando
