I do not understand your surprise. What Karpov said is only human. It happens to everybody. It is hard to gather ALL your strengh for any endeavour, exception made of very critical kind of challenges. In fact it happens all the time in the realm of GM's, where many times we see games lost or won due to uncredible lack of concentration, relaxation, etc. It is obvious that the caliber of the opposition works in our internals brain gears. Karpov is not an automaton and suffer the same. In any case, he always try to play to kill. Problem is that sometimes he takes a machine gun to do the job and other times he dims enough a .22 caliber pistol. Mb Fernando
