I presume Fruit's team has spoken with others and have a fair idea of the probable sales they can expect, based on other's ventures in the marketplace with similar programs. Clearly, it would nearly impossible for Fruit to become World Champion if it blindly released it's source code, without regard for the consequences. Even Crafty is well, "crafty" about releasing his tournament book and latest code changes until after the tournament is over. The question that comes to my mind is whether Fruit can commercially sustain itself in it's market niche (strong program, but no GUI or learning features like ChessMaster and no shelf space in the stores), and give support enough to keep it's small team together.
