I have never been able to score even a single quarter point (the loser gets a quarter of a point in the case of stalemate) against Scatha, and most of the time I am behind in material before move 20. I hoped my new "Scatha Brute Force" engine (which uses plain PVS without null-move or other pruning) would be less invincible, but it turns out that I hardly notice any difference (except the displayed search depth). I am beginning to suspect that hexagonal chess is a fundamentally more difficult game for humans than rectangular chess. The chess pieces (except for the bishop) are more powerful on the hexagonal board, which results in a much bigger number of complex tactical motifs, mating patterns, and the like. The sheer number and complexity of the patterns makes them difficult to recognize and remember. It feels like I lose to an entirely new type of tactical shot in every single game (except when I just make an elementary blunder, which is also not unusual). Tord
