Subject: What's First?

I have just joined this Computer Chess Club and have been excited about
programming. I've been wanting to start my own program for years now but have
not found the time nor the resources. I have numerous chess source codes to
review but have not looked at one yet. I feel that I am a very strong C
programmer but have no experience whatsoever in Chess programming.

Here is(are) my question(s): Where do I start? Should I start looking at some
sample code? Would I understand it if I did, having no prior knowledge of chess
programming? Or should I just start from scratch with nothing to refer to? Are
there any good resources, books, etc. for the "beginner" chess programmer?

What's the first step; Board representation? Are there different choices in
this? Please help, I know that most of you have your own programs, and probably
could direct me in the right direction.

Thanks
