Well, if you really want a nice dedicated chess computer, you can look around for a TASC R30 model. It is an autosensory board with piece recognition (it just knows that a black bishop is sitting on square e7; right after you exit the position setup menu item). The workmanship of this unit is first class all around, with the possible exception of the pieces (they are nice, wooden, but no weights inside). It runs a version of Johan deKonigs (spelling?) "The King" program -- a tactical monster (for the hardware) with very smooth positional skills as well. The playing strength is about 2370 ELO, which is not bad for most of us patzers. My apologies if you are a titled player! I heard that they are not sold anymore due to some sort of legal wranglings over the piece recognition aspect of the unit. If you can find one of these, I'd grab it. I own one and don't intend to ever sell it. Roy
