"If Chessbase does have a batch mode where, with ONE operation, it can split the
MegaDB, for example, into 85000 PGN files, each file with all the games by a
single player, white and black, then I'm wrong and I'll cheerfully admit it --
but your procedure given in your note above does not address that issue.

You have Chesbase 7 right?
Open Chessbase 7 Right click on your .pgn file
You will get a Menu
Make this your Reference database (See the little box?)
Then left click the file..
Now Right click the file
Menu  'Open"
You will see a list of all the game.
Toolbar
Click on PLayers
All the players will be listed in Alphbetical order
Click on any name
Every Game of the player will be listed White & Black in Chronological order.
