Subject: Bye, bye, Santiago; Bye, bye, Fernando!

Author: Ingo Althofer

Today my six day visit to Santiago ends (the flight goes at 15:55 local time) -
and I have to leave my very very good friend Fernando Villegas (before these
six days he was only in the class of my very good friends) and his house. The
days were maravillosa ("marvellous" for Senores Non-Castellan), and
especialemente I will miss Yvette, his wife, and his three daughters: the
scientista, the artista, and the comedista (Fernandos coarse classification of
them). Also IM Rodrigo Vasquez has become a friend of mine. Consequentemente I
will never forget this week. Semana fantastica!

Mil gracias, Fernando, dos mil gracias, Familia Villegas!!

Ingo Althofer.

PS: (i) Before I came to Santigo, I thought Fernando was some average calibre
journalist. What a mistake! He is one of the very top shots here in
Chile. He has columns in all serious magazines, he has a political
TV magazine (in Chile-TV), you can hear his voice in several radio
          stations.
Today, for instance, he will make an interview with the most promising
candidate for the next Chilean President elections. (And this
interview will be printed in the Chilenian counterpart to what is "Der
          Spiegel" in Germany.)
Fernando is one of the prominent persons in Chile. And although not
all people like him (his questions are more direct than it is common
in Chile) it is a Minus not to be mentioned in his articles.
I admire his way of working and living. Maybe, one day I will try to
          make a similar living.

(ii) Thanks to Mortz Berger who made a ChessBase profile of IM Vasquez!
Unfortunately I read it only after the match.

(iii) I will be back in Jena at the end of March. Before I will not read
           CCC again.
