Thank you for that Tom. Both suggestions were correct:-
1)The log was set to off in Crafty.rc
2)When I set the log to on, Crafty produced logs named 001.log instead of
log.001.

I solved the problem by using Quark instead of Crafty and the program now runs!

The problem now is that the log file is not collecting the OPK number and so the
program is only searching a few ply, as I found out when I crushed it in a blitz
game. Good for the ego bad for the grasp on reality.

I don't suppose you can tell by looking at the VB why the log is not picking up
the OPK?
