I'm far too weak a player to have a personal opinion, but letting Spike and Toga play against each other in two minute games, Toga won as black with d6 and lost when forced to use Ne8. Throughout the early part of the first game Toga thought the game was even while Spike thought it was up by two pawns. It would take a lot more games to be sure, and preferably at longer time control and various engines, but avoiding Ne8 doesn't look wrong.
