Hello I just finished a long test on the quality sacrifice by Topalov against Kasim in the WC. Apart from the results, which are mildly interesting (Fruit 2.1 at depth 28/76 thinks that Topalov has a 0.31 pawn advantage) what surprised me is the branching factor. With excel I plotted the time and nodes needed for each additional ply, and it seems that the branching factor is only 2.4 (or even slightly less) for both of them. I tought the branching factor of modern programs was more of the order 3.5. Is the 2.4 value typical of Fruit, or is it due to the particulare position, or I was just wrong and most modern programs have a branching factor smaller than 3 ? Maurizio P.S. This is the principal variation after 45 hours (Arena crashed afterwards). If anybody with a faster computer or a better program (like Fruit 2.2 with tablebases) wants to give the position a shot, he is more than welcome.
