A question Mark has posed himself is [I paraphrase somewhat]: "For what number of men is the 'DTZ' depth maximised?" He suggested it might have peaked with the maxDTZ = 243 for KRNKNN but we now see that this is not the case. I see no particular reason why KRRNKRR exhibits the maxDTZ for 7-men either, One might conjecture that there would be no Pawns on the board as a Pawn-advance sets the move-count back to zero, but KNNKP is a 5-man counter-example. According to the endgame stats, available at www.icga.org, maxDTZs are: #-men P-less maxDTZ P-ful maxDTZ Notes 3 KRK 16 KPK 10 4 KBNK 33 KQKP 26 5 KBNKN 77 KNNKP 82 6 KRNKNN 243 ?? P-ful EGTs not available 7 KRRNKRR 290 ?? ... so far Note that DTZ is "Depth to [move-count] Zeroing move" and not DTM which is "Depth to Mate" or DTC which is "Depth to Conversion [i.e. capture and/or conversion and/or mate]". g
