The only plausible assumption with the knowledge we have at present was that Anand was seeing ghosts (i.e. terrible things for White after Nc3 + Nxa4), instead opting for a line that he thought would also draw. But it didn't, in THAT line his phantasms became real. Interesting that the game revolved around two Nc3 moves by White: the first deserving of two exclamation marks, the second discarded for the wrong reasons... Charley
