In the 1970's, 'blitz' was invited every year to play in the Mississippi State chess championship. During that time, if you look at old rating supplements, you will find our rating in the 1500-1600's which means we were never a threat to win this event. In 1981, we were invited back and had just moved to the Cray-1. Nobody really knew what that meant until the tournament was underway and it was apparent that something 'new' was happening..namely that Cray Blitz was shredding players right and left. In the next to last round we beat USCF Master Joe Sentef, the first time a master had been beat by a computer in a normal 40/2 time control (the game was published in Chess LIfe later that year). Cray Blitz went 5 0, finished in clear first place, and was _never_ invited back again. One can only guess 'why'. :) Lots of GM players on ICC say "no computers" but if you use the search command you will find they play plenty of computer games. I think they only get tired of getting matched by all the manual computer operators (automatic programs don't generally issue challenges, they just wait and accept matches from others. >>>>> >>>>> >>>>>--Peter >>>> >>>>I have looked from time to time. They organized about 20 years ago into "Citizens against >>Computers" and pretty well shut down computer participation..
